Doctors Without Borders has been delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, disasters, and healthcare exclusion since 1971. Every year, more than 3,000 international staff provide lifesaving medical and humanitarian care to populations in danger around the globe. The dedicated healthcare professionals who work for the Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization are exposed to some of the most dangerous parts of the world, an intense working environment, limited resources, and hectic working hours. The life of an MSF field worker is not for the faint of heart.
So how does MSF recruit the right people for this all-consuming work? As of 2018, they’ll look to Figure 1’s global community of engaged healthcare providers. During the month of January, medical professionals on Figure 1 can contact MSF recruiters directly in the app, bringing them one step closer to qualifying for a field assignment.
“Figure 1 is a large community of medical professionals who are interested in providing lifesaving medical assistance to those in need,” said Doug Mercer, Field HR Recruitment Coordinator at MSF USA. “We are excited to engage with this community and encourage them to visit our website and join the movement.”
Using Figure 1 as a formal recruiting tool represents a natural evolution for MSF. The non-profit was one of the first medical organizations to share their cases on Figure 1, building a large and enthusiastic following on the platform. Healthcare professionals in the community consistently praise the organization’s good work. As an orthopedic surgeon said in response to a recent MSF case, “How selfless must you be to put your own safety at risk to help others? The word hero is often overused, but very apt here.”
We couldn’t agree more.
